Handbags and Gladrags

“Handbags and Gladrags” is a song written by Mike D’Abo, lead singer of Mannfred Mann. He describes the song as “saying to a teenage girl that the way to happiness is not through being trendy. There are deeper values.”

Chris Farlowe released the first version of the song in 1967, reaching #33 in the UK Record Retailer chart. The following year, Rod Stewart recorded the song for his first solo album, “An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down”.

Although not a big hit at the time the song gained recognition 34 years later when used as the theme tune to the British comedy series, The Office. Around the same time, The Stereophonics recorded a version that became one of their biggest hits, reaching #4 in the UK charts, Christmas 2001.

My version was recorded during a live stream on Wednesday, 24th February 2021.
